Dear Women Do News community,

If you are subscribed to this email, you know how much it matters what gets recorded — and what doesn’t — on Wikipedia. Men still have four times the number of biographies as women on Wikipedia, one of the world’s most visited websites that fuels AI products and search algorithms.

So our team and community of volunteers — including you! — are working to change the system, one biography at a time and by building broad awareness of the systemic exclusion we as women journalists face. It feels good to do something, whatever we can, whether it’s 10 minutes of editing, a half day edit-a-thon, or a donation to help keep the programs going.

And it feels even better to see us getting closer to a tipping point at our five-year mark. So I’m writing to you today to ask for your support. Please give, at any level, to help Women Do News have a strong start to 2025!

Today, 79 new biographies of women journalists nominated through Women Do News have been published, and editors have stepped up to improve 101 biographies already there! As more people understand how important fair representation is on Wikipedia, the number of people nominated has grown, so our work continues.

This volunteer effort needs your help. Women Do News needs $20,000 in contributions to help keep us going strong into the new year and an amazing donor has offered to put up half of that if we can raise the rest. We’ll use these funds in 2025 for help with project management, cover travel costs to speak and teach about editing on Wikipedia, and spread the word about the importance of representation of women and non-binary journalists online.

If we keep building community, we can use the challenge of seeking equal representation as a springboard to strength.

In solidarity, and on behalf of our amazing volunteer board,

Angilee Shah
Founding Board Chair, Women Do News
